A commissioned project for Uncommon Dubai, which was edited by Sharmeen Inayat and released in 2018. The book is a collection of memoirs, investigations, photo essays and poems about Dubai’s culture and history. Sharmeen asked me to shoot a project about one street in Oud Metha – as it happens, the neighbourhood I went to school in.
I chose to focus on the architecture around Oud Metha, becasue it’s so literal: you’ve got the wooden cottages of the Norwegian Seafarers’ Club, the Islamic architecture of the Pakistani school, the crosses above the Orthodox Church, the Jesus statues at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The neighbourhood is a very on-the-nose display of Dubai’s cultural makeup.
